The Formats, Genres and Styles used in TV Shows

Television shows are one of the most diverse forms of media due to the various formats and genres that are available. Fictional shows, such as comedy and dramas are popular in this area. Non-fictional shows, such as documentary, news, and reality televisionare highly popular. Certain shows could be considered to be current, such as local newscasts, or historical, like many documentaries or fictional films. They could be primarily instructional or educational, or even entertaining like in game and situation comedy shows.

Drama programs typically have actors portraying characters in the context of a modern or historical one and follow their lives and journeys. The shows prior to the 1980s generally were not able to tell narrative arcs and the main characters and the premise did not change much. If any changes happened to the lives of characters during the episode, they were usually undone at the end. Because of this, episodes could be broadcast in any order. However, since the 1980s the majority of films feature progressive changes in the plot, the characters, or both. Hill Street Blues and St. Elsewhere were two of the very first American prime-time drama television movies with this type of dramatic structure, while the later film Babylon 5 further exemplifies such structure because it had an established storyline that ran over its five-season planned time period.

In 2012, television became an important part of the major media companies' revenues than film. Some people also noticed the improvement in the quality of some television programs. Academy-Award-winning film director Steven Soderbergh commented on ambiguity and complexity of character and narrative, stating, "I think those qualities are now being seen on television and that people who want to see stories that have those kinds of qualities are watching television."

Common terms used to describe the field generally include the big screen the silver screen cinema, and the movies. The latter is often employed as an overarching phrase in academic texts and essays. In the early years when the word "sheet" was used instead of "screen." Film generally isn't a suitable term to describe the length of a commercial video production as it's vague in general and thus requires context for correct interpretation.

The rise of European cinema was interrupted by the outbreak of World War I, while the film industry in the United States flourished with the growth of Hollywood and was most notably exemplified by the pioneering works that was done by D. W. Griffith in The Birth of a Nation (1915) and Integrity (1916). However, in the 1920s, European filmmakers such as Eisenstein, F. W. Murnau, and Fritz Lang
